The Community Foundation of Monroe County, in collaboration with the County of Monroe, City of Monroe, Monroe County Intermediate School District, and the Department of Natural Resources, will work together on five recreational projects that take advantage of Monroe County’s historical sites and unique natural environment. Lake Erie and the Raisin River provide exceptional opportunities for outdoor recreation, such as fishing, canoeing, swimming and wildlife viewing. The River Raisin War of 1812 Battlefield site and the Navarre Anderson Trading Post attract visitors year-round. Projects include:
- Enhance the walking path experience between Sterling State Park and River Raisin Battlefield by constructing two barrier free viewing/fishing piers and audio/visual interpretation along the pathway.
- Enhance Ida Township Park by adding accessible picnic tables, swings and accessible play surface.
- Purchase accessible play equipment for two playgrounds in the new 30 acre park in Monroe Charter Township.
- Build a universally accessible sensory garden in Munson Park in the City of Monroe
- Add historical and cultural interpretive stations at the Navarre-Anderson Trading Post and on the grounds of this county park.
